NCO Youth & Family Services Names Three New
Board Members
(Naperville) NCO Youth & Family
Services welcomes Jeffery Clark, Joe Vozar and
Tony Chirico, as new board members with a term
of three years, to its Board of Directors.
Jeffery Clark is a Senior Manager for QDI Strategies,
Inc. of Libertyville. Clark develops and manages
strategic marketing consulting projects for QDI. Clark
serves on the Thornton Alumni Legacy Fund foundation
and is a member of Naperville District 203 School,
Family and Community Partnership committee. Clark
has lived in the Naperville area for 6 years.
Joe Vozar is a retired
Chief Financial Officer for Household Finance Corporation. Vozar has been
a 28 year resident of the Naperville area. He
has been involved with the Galaxy traveling soccer
club and NNHS Girl’s Lacrosse team.
Tony Chirico is returning
to the board after a couple year hiatus. Chirico
is owner and principle of AG Real Estate Investors
LLC, a commercial real estate development, consulting
and brokerage company. Chirico is a former NCO
Board president.
NCO Youth & Family Services is a private, not-for-profit
human service agency supported, in part, by United
Way. Services include sliding-fee counseling
for youth, adults and families, 24-hour crisis intervention
for runaways/lockouts, temporary and long-term shelter
for boys 13-17 years and transitional housing for
young adults 18-21 years. Also provided are
prevention/social competency programs serving children
K-12 and families as well as parent mentoring and
youth leadership programs. NCO has offered
services to youth & families in DuPage and Kane
Counties as well as surrounding communities for more
than 37years.

NCO Plans Spring Ahead 5K Street
Run, 5K Wheelchair Event and 10K Trail Run
NCO Youth and Family
Services is sponsoring its 9th Annual Spring Ahead
Run on Sunday, April 20, 2008 with a new starting
location. Calamos
Investments is the new presenting sponsor for this
long running event. This year’s event
will begin and end on the Calamos campus, located
on the southwest corner of Ferry Rd. and Route 59. The
event will feature three different choices for participants,
a 5K Street Run, 5K Wheelchair event and a 10K Trail
Run.
The course for the 5K
Street Run and Wheelchair event is a relatively
flat route that goes down Ferry Rd. to Raymond
and over I-88 with a turnaround in front of the
Tellabs Headquarters. The 10K
Trail Run goes through McDowell Grove Forest Preserve.
This route incorporates a section that is adjacent
to the DuPage River as well as sections of forest
and prairie. The trails are dirt, grass and
crushed limestone. The races are certified
by the USATF. Cash prizes will be awarded to
the overall male and females winners of each race.
“This race attracts 1200 to 1500 runners each
year,” stated Julie Lichter, NCO’s Development
Director. “This is a great race for the
weekend road warrior to the well-trained marathoner. This
race has something for everyone.”
The 10K Trail Run begins
at 8:00 a.m. The 5K Wheelchair Race will begin
at 8:10 am followed by the 5K Street Run which
begins at 8:15 a.m.
Pre-registration and
packet pick up will be held on Saturday, April
12 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Endure It located
at 504 W. 5th Avenue behind
Naperville North High School and Thursday, April
17 from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at The Naperville Running
Company, located at 20 W. Jefferson Avenue
in downtown Naperville. In addition to these
two dates, it is possible to register online at www.NCOSpingAhead.com or
on www.active.com. A
downloadable registration form is also available
that can be either mailed or faxed in.
Proceeds from the race
go to support the programs and services of NCO
Youth & Family Services,
a non-profit, charitable organization whose goal
is to enrich the lives and relationships of youth
and families through prevention, education, counseling,
and housing. NCO has been providing services

NCO Executive
Director Hume Speaks at LDA Conference in Chicago
Naperville - Ron Hume, Executive
Director of NCO Youth & Family
Services will be presenting at the 45th Annual International
Conference of the Learning Disabilities Association of America
(LDA of America) on February 27 – March 1, 2008 in Chicago. The
annual conference is attended by over 3000 individuals including;
professionals, educators, researchers and parents from across
the United States and fifteen foreign countries.
Hume will be presenting workshops
on the topics of Learning Disabilities and the Juvenile Justice
System: Practice to Policy, presented with Detective Dave
Parr of the North Aurora Police Department, Bradley Bittan,
an attorney from Denver, CO and David Admire, J.D. from Bethany
College in Lindsborg KS. This
session will cover from the street to the courtroom and beyond
addressing the unique features of the individuals with learning
and attention disabilities in the justice system.
Hume will also present a session entitled “It’s
not Just an Academic Problem” addressing how individuals
who struggle with learning and attention difficulties often
experience a complex array of social, emotional and behavioral
problems. They session will explore this complicated
and confusing puzzle that is often so problematic in the family,
school or work and community.
Hume serves on the LDA of America
Board of Directors and as its chair for the Justice System/Mental
Health Committee. Hume
joined NCO in June 2006, as its Executive Director.

NCO Youth & Family
Services Presents THINK FIRST
Naperville – NCO Youth & Family
Services has developed a group program entitled THINK
FIRST geared for high school students with ADHD. This
group uses participant’s strengths to help them learn
about their ADHD and how it affects relationships (families,
friends, and teachers), peer-pressure, communication, managing
anger, and conflict resolution.
THINK FIRST also
provides a parent component, offering support and strategies
to the ADHD family. The 12 week group starts March 6th
and will be held on Thursday evenings from 7-8:30 p.m.
THINK FIRST is
co-facilitated by a licensed professional counselor and a state
certified special education teacher, with a primary specialty
in learning and attention deficits. The goals of the program
are:
- To help participants learn
about ADHD and provide them with strategies and skills
to increase their ability to manage themselves in a responsible
manner in multiple settings.
- To provide participants with
opportunities to explore their identity, while increasing
their self-awareness and self-esteem.
- To provide participants with
strategies to improve their relationships with family,
peers, school personnel, and employers through direct instruction
in communication techniques and self-advocacy.
- To increase participants awareness
of individual learning styles.
- To increase skills in problem
solving and conflict resolution, while improving coping
skills.
- To support and educate parents
and participants in developing strategies to manage and
live effectively with ADHD.
Throughout the 12 week program participants
will be encouraged to participate in group activities and discussions
that promote a greater understanding of ADHD and the positive
and challenging impact it has on their lives and the lives
of others. Participants will be encouraged to participate
in self-assessments to increase their self-awareness as well
as to measure their progress throughout the duration of the
class.
Each week’s session will focus
on a different topic including : Building a community
and exploring perceptions of ADHD, define and discuss ADHD – strengths
and weaknesses, learning styles, exploring anger/emotions,
problem solving, relationships, self-advocacy, coping strategies,
stress management, addiction, and peer pressure.
